Sir John Franklin was a British naval officer and Arctic explorer who led expeditions seeking the Northwest Passage. His final voyage departed in 1845 with HMS Erebus and HMS Terror and disappeared in the Canadian Arctic.
Later searches established that the ships became trapped in ice and that all members of the expedition died after abandoning them. The disaster generated a vast search effort and became a defining story of Victorian exploration, endurance and imperial ambition.
