Cecily Neville, Duchess of York

1415–1495

Cecily Neville was the wife of Richard, Duke of York, and mother of Edward IV and Richard III. Known as the ‘Rose of Raby’, she stood at the centre of Yorkist dynastic politics during the Wars of the Roses and survived the deaths and reversals that destroyed much of her family.

Cecily Neville, Duchess of York also held the offices or ranks of Duchess of York. Cecily Neville, Duchess of York belonged to the House of Neville and operated within Kingdom of England. Cecily Neville, Duchess of York was born in Raby Castle and died in Berkhamsted Castle.

Anne O’Brien’s The Queen’s Rival makes Cecily Neville the central survivor of the Yorkist collapse at Ludford Bridge, showing her protecting children, estates and dynastic communications while her husband and elder sons are attainted. Anne Easter Smith’s Queen by Right follows Cecily across the longer marriage to Richard of York and the family’s transformation from great nobility into a claimant dynasty. Joanna Hickson’s Red Rose, White Rose places her within the intimate family divisions that harden into the Wars of the Roses, while Smith’s This Son of York brings her into Richard III’s story as mother of kings and witness to the destruction of the house she helped build. Sarah Gristwood’s Blood Sisters then treats Cecily alongside Margaret of Anjou, Margaret Beaufort, Elizabeth Woodville and other women whose marriages and maternal claims were active political forces in the dynastic wars.
