Agnes Howard, Duchess of Norfolk

Agnes Howard, Duchess of Norfolk, born Agnes Tilney, was a powerful Tudor noblewoman and the second wife of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk. As head of a large aristocratic household, she supervised the upbringing of several young female relatives, including Catherine Howard. After Catherine became Henry VIII’s queen, investigators alleged that the duchess had concealed evidence of Catherine’s earlier relationships; Agnes was imprisoned in the Tower in 1541 but later pardoned.

In historical fiction, Agnes is usually portrayed through the dangerous household politics surrounding Catherine Howard and the Howard family’s ambitions at court. She appears in Philippa Gregory’s The Boleyn Inheritance and in Alison Weir’s Katheryn Howard, The Tainted Queen, where her household provides both opportunity and vulnerability for the future queen. These novels often emphasise the limits of supervision within a crowded noble establishment and the severe consequences of Tudor scandal.
