Las Navas de Tolosa was fought on 16 July 1212 after a Christian coalition crossed the Sierra Morena to confront the army of Muhammad al-Nasir. Alfonso VIII of Castile was joined by forces from Aragon, Navarre, military orders and crusaders from beyond Iberia.
The victory broke the immediate Almohad offensive capacity in Iberia, although conquest remained a long process rather than an instant collapse. Later memory gave the battle major religious and national significance.
The battle provides historical fiction with coalition politics, difficult terrain and a clash in which knights, infantry and camp followers all faced extreme risk. The Crescent and the Cross places Arnau de Vallbona within the campaign.
