Almohad Wars in Iberia
1195–1212 CE
The Almohad victory at Alarcos in 1195 checked Castilian expansion and demonstrated the military strength of the caliphate in al-Andalus. The following years brought raids, fortress warfare, shifting truces and attempts by Christian kingdoms to overcome their own rivalries.
By 1212 Alfonso VIII of Castile had secured papal support and assembled a coalition for a major campaign against Caliph Muhammad al-Nasir. The conflict connected Iberian dynastic politics with the language and institutions of crusade.
The opening books of Simon Turney’s Knights Templar series are set amid these pressures.
