In the early 1930s, a young Chicago woman leaves the city for relatives on a Wyoming cattle ranch, determined to make choices for herself rather than accept the future others have arranged. The move brings her into a western community where long-established ranch customs are confronting the economic and social pressures of modern America.
Life on the ranch requires practical independence rather than the abstract freedom she imagined from Chicago. Work, family expectations and romance force her to reconsider what belonging means in a region where older frontier identities persist even as roads, markets and changing social conventions make isolation increasingly difficult to preserve.
