Berlin, 1938. Englishman Conrad de Lancey, already hardened by the Spanish Civil War, enters a Germany transformed by the Nazi regime. After Gestapo arrest and rescue by his German Oxford friend Theo von Hertenberg, Conrad is drawn into contacts between German opponents of Hitler and British officials.

The novel builds its suspense around the real September 1938 conspiracy to remove Hitler if the Sudeten crisis led to war, while the Munich crisis narrows the conspirators’ options. Historical intelligence and political figures intersect with the fictional protagonists as loyalty, patriotism and opposition to dictatorship become increasingly difficult to separate.
