In 1960, Scottish musician Hamil Strathearn meets Olivia, the sophisticated London friend brought home by his younger sister for Christmas. Olivia unsettles the conventional rhythms of the Strathearn household and eventually marries Hamil's younger brother Ewan, but the attachment between Hamil and Olivia survives their separate marriages and years of distance.

Their relationship unfolds against the social changes of post-war Britain, moving from the restraint of middle-class Edinburgh into a more permissive age. Rather than treating love as a single decisive choice, the novel follows the consequences of timing, loyalty and compromise across many years, asking what remains when passion must coexist with family obligations and lives built elsewhere.
