In Whitechapel during the August Bank Holiday of 1888, seamstress Esther Jacobs learns that her friend Martha Turner has been brutally murdered. The killing is initially treated as an isolated crime, but Esther refuses to let poverty and reputation determine how seriously the victim is remembered or investigated.
Police officer Jack Enright takes charge of the case and finds Esther an unusually perceptive ally. When another woman is murdered and rumours of a killer called Jack the Ripper spread through the East End, their search leads through lodging houses, public houses and streets where fear is rapidly overtaking evidence.
