Book
The Burning Road
First published 2021
In AD 265 Ballista returns towards Sicily with his eldest son, hoping to rebuild a relationship damaged by years of campaigning. Shipwreck and a widespread slave uprising leave them stranded on an island where estates burn, roads are blocked and imperial authority has almost disappeared.
Their attempt to reach Ballista’s family becomes a journey through rebellion and reprisal. Survival depends on cooperation between father and son as they encounter fugitives, landowners, soldiers and enslaved people whose choices have been shaped by the violence of Roman society.
