Rome is a city where advancement depends on proximity to men whose favour can disappear without warning. A soldier and political outsider is drawn into a struggle involving patronage, rivalry and concealed ambition, discovering that service close to power offers opportunity only so long as the people above him continue to find him useful.

The title invokes the ancient image of a sword suspended above a fortunate courtier to represent the insecurity hidden beneath privilege. The novel uses that idea to examine Roman political life, where wealth, military reputation and public loyalty can raise a man quickly while leaving him exposed to accusation, faction and the changing priorities of more powerful patrons. Its conflicts are shaped less by open battle than by the fear that favour can become accusation before a man has time to defend himself.
