The novella continues the early career begun in Son of Mars, placing Marius at the intersection of military service and the increasingly dangerous politics of late Republican Rome.
The crisis surrounding the Gracchan reforms teaches Marius that military achievement alone is insufficient in Rome. Land, citizenship and the distribution of political power are becoming questions capable of producing street violence and murder. His response to that world anticipates the career of a commander who will later combine popular politics with military reputation in ways that further weaken republican conventions.
