Massachusetts, 1763. Susanna Smith and young lawyer Benjamin Ross intervene when a runaway indentured servant is in danger, placing themselves against local expectations about property, obedience and who is entitled to legal protection. Their decision draws them together while exposing both to social and professional consequences.
Susanna and Benjamin are fictionalised versions of Abigail and John Adams before their marriage. The story uses their defence of the servant to explore a colonial society already arguing about arbitrary authority, individual rights and the limits of lawful obedience. Their developing relationship is therefore tied to the same questions of conscience and public duty that will soon shape resistance to British rule.
