Praetorian
Rome, AD 180s. Gnaeus Marcius Rustius Rufinus is promoted from the legions into the Praetorian Guard during a moment of crisis and discovers that the emperor’s protectors operate inside a world of bribery, surveillance and competing court factions. A plot involving Lucilla places his new loyalty under immediate suspicion.
Rufinus must learn the rules of an institution where a careless friendship or overheard conversation can be fatal. The investigation brings him close to Commodus and to people willing to kill in the name of stability, revenge or succession. His first service in the Guard shows that the palace can be more dangerous than any frontier battlefield.
