Acre, 1291. The last major Christian stronghold in the Holy Land prepares for attack by the Mamluk army. William of Beaujeu, Grand Master of the Knights Templar, attempts to preserve both the city and his military order while merchants, mercenaries, clergy and rival contingents struggle to cooperate. Fourteen-year-old Benedict serves him as a spy and messenger within the threatened garrison.
Benedict moves among allies including the adventurer de Flor, the young Hospitaller Theobald, the court dwarf Amethyst and the camel master Selim, while assassins and factional enemies work inside the walls. As the siege closes around them and aid from Europe fails to arrive, survival depends on recognising which conflicts can still be controlled before Acre and the Crusader presence on the mainland are destroyed.
