Mr. Justice Raffles

by E W Hornung Book 4 in the Raffles series.

First published 1909

3.5(300)

Raffles intervenes when the young Lord Amersteth becomes trapped by Dan Levy, a moneylender who profits from debt, secrecy and fear of scandal. What begins as an attempt to outmanoeuvre Levy develops into a sustained contest of burglary, blackmail and counter-blackmail in which Raffles claims the right to punish a man he regards as more corrupt than himself.

The only full-length Raffles novel gives greater space to the contradictions in his private code. Bunny remains both witness and accomplice as admiration gives way to anxiety, and the conflict exposes a London economy in which inherited status, credit and criminal coercion are closely connected.
