A meeting of Peter Maxwell’s history club ends in a deadly explosion, leaving a charred body and an immediate suspicion that Maxwell himself may have been the intended target. A subsequent hit-and-run attempt removes any doubt that someone is pursuing him, but neither Maxwell nor the police can see what grievance connects the attacks to his apparently harmless teaching.
The danger widens when his neighbour Mrs B is abducted and Maxwell discovers that somebody has been turning his history lessons into a call to violence. Faced with an attacker who treats the past as justification for present revenge, he must identify the pattern before another target is struck and before the campaign against him reaches the people closest to him.
