Schoolmaster Murder Mysteries

The Peter Maxwell mysteries centre on the eccentric history teacher of Leighford High School, a widower, film enthusiast and habitual enemy of educational bureaucracy who repeatedly becomes involved in murder investigations. Maxwell’s knowledge of his pupils and colleagues, his appetite for historical analogy and his refusal to leave awkward questions alone make him an effective amateur detective despite the irritation he causes the local police.

The series is contemporary rather than historical fiction, but school life gives it a consistent social setting: staff-room politics, inspections, trips, holidays, retirements and changing technology repeatedly create the circumstances for crime. Over twenty-three books, Maxwell’s relationships with Leighford, his family, his cat and the police supply continuity alongside the individual mysteries.
