Matilda of Flanders married William of Normandy before his conquest of England and became the first English queen to receive a formal coronation. Tracy Borman reconstructs her Flemish background, partnership with William and responsibilities on both sides of the Channel, including periods of regency in Normandy while her husband secured his new kingdom.
The biography considers Matilda’s religious patronage, political authority and relationship with her children, particularly the conflict between William and their eldest son Robert Curthose.
