In the Four Corners region during the 1920s, a fashionable woman from the East enters the remote world of an archaeologist working among ancient ruins. The difficult country and the seriousness of his work challenge her expectations, while their uneasy attraction develops in a setting far removed from the social life to which she is accustomed.

The novel places romance beside the growing public fascination with Southwestern archaeology and the tension between modern visitors and the remains of much older cultures. Distance, fieldwork and isolation strip away easy assumptions, leaving both characters to decide whether their interest in one another can survive the very different lives they represent.
