The novel recasts Arthurian legend in a fractured near-future Britain. Brennan must unite communities that distrust one another, organise resistance and decide what kind of authority can replace the lost state, becoming an Arthur-like war leader without the certainty that the old kingdom—or its ideals—can be restored.
