Lillian Porter defies her grandfather and travels west to become nanny to seven-year-old Jimmy Colton at an olive farm near Angels Camp, California. The boy has not spoken since his mother’s death, and local rumours portray his father, Woodward, as responsible for the tragedy.
Lillian’s experience of the household conflicts with the town’s certainty, but trespass, deliberate damage and an attack on the housekeeper show that the farm is not safe. As she encourages Jimmy to communicate, she begins reconstructing what he witnessed. Clearing Woodward’s name may expose the person who has used silence and gossip to conceal continuing violence.
