The Battle of Chickamauga examines the September 1863 struggle that followed the Union advance through Tennessee and northern Georgia. It traces the movements of William Rosecrans and Braxton Bragg, the arrival of James Longstreet’s corps and the command error that opened a gap in the Union line.
The narrative follows the Confederate breakthrough and George H. Thomas’s stand on Snodgrass Hill, which allowed much of the Union army to retreat to Chattanooga. It also explains why one of the Confederacy’s greatest battlefield victories failed to produce a lasting strategic reversal.
