The Battle of Gettysburg follows the three days of fighting in Pennsylvania from 1 to 3 July 1863. It traces Robert E. Lee’s second invasion of the North, the improvised concentration of both armies and the battles at Cemetery Hill, Little Round Top, the Wheatfield and Culp’s Hill.

The final assault known as Pickett’s Charge ended Lee’s offensive and forced the Army of Northern Virginia to withdraw. The book considers command decisions, terrain, casualties and memory, explaining why Gettysburg became both a military turning point and a defining symbol of the Union cause.
