Braxton Bragg was a United States Army officer and Confederate general who commanded the Army of Tennessee through major western campaigns of the American Civil War.
Bragg served in the Seminole and Mexican–American wars before resigning from the United States Army. In Confederate service he commanded at Shiloh, led the invasion of Kentucky, fought at Stones River and won a costly victory at Chickamauga. His difficult relations with senior subordinates and his failure to exploit Chickamauga contributed to the defeat at Chattanooga and his removal from army command.
