British East Africa, 1913. Leon Courtney has left the army and built a reputation as a professional hunter. His uncle, General Penrod Ballantyne, recruits him to observe German clients and identify preparations for a European war that may spread into Africa. The safari world also provides cover for intelligence gathering in a region where British and German colonies share borders, trade routes and African communities.

Leon’s principal target is the industrialist Otto von Meerbach, but the assignment is complicated by his relationship with Eva von Wellberg. Evidence of German plans and Boer discontent turns the safari world into an intelligence battlefield where personal loyalty and imperial duty cannot be separated. Leon’s divided obligations to his clients, the Maasai and British military planners anticipate the East African campaign, where imperial rivalry will transform local landscapes into a theatre of global war.
