Gwyn Hillerman works as a nurse in her father’s clinic in Alaska’s Matanuska Valley, where the federal resettlement programme of 1935 is preparing to bring farming families north from the Depression-stricken Midwest. She values the isolation her mother rejected and fears that the new colony will destroy the community she knows.

Chicago doctor Jeremiah Vaughan accepts Dr Hillerman’s invitation after a patient’s death costs him his licence and his engagement. As settlers arrive, the clinic faces growing demands and rumours about Jeremiah’s past threaten the trust forming between him and Gwyn. Their romance develops within a New Deal experiment whose promises of renewal conceal political conflict and personal desperation.
