J.J. Scarisbrick

J. J. Scarisbrick (John Joseph “Jack” Scarisbrick, 1928–2026) was a British historian best known for his scholarship on Tudor England and the English Reformation. Educated at Christ’s College, Cambridge, after service in the Royal Air Force, he pursued an academic career specialising in the political and religious history of sixteenth-century England. Scarisbrick became an important revisionist voice in Tudor historiography, questioning interpretations that presented the Reformation as either an inevitable popular movement or principally the achievement of Henry VIII’s ministers. His work instead placed greater emphasis on the personality and decisions of Henry VIII himself and on the disruption that religious change caused among ordinary English communities.

Scarisbrick’s most influential book was Henry VIII, first published in 1968, a major study of the king’s government, marriages, foreign policy and break with Rome. The book challenged G. R. Elton’s influential emphasis on Thomas Cromwell by arguing that Henry himself was a decisive force behind the transformation of Church and state. Scarisbrick developed his interpretation of religious change further in The Reformation and the English People (1984), arguing that traditional Catholic religion retained substantial popular support and that many English people were reluctant to accept the Reformation. These arguments became an important part of the revisionist reassessment of the English Reformation and helped influence later historians studying the persistence of traditional religion in Tudor England.
