Texas–Comanche Conflict

Comanche bands controlled a vast southern plains region often called Comancheria. Expanding Mexican and Anglo-American settlement produced cycles of raiding, captive-taking, military retaliation and failed treaty negotiations.

The Republic of Texas, the United States Army, ranger companies and allied Indigenous scouts gradually intensified operations against Comanche communities. Settlement, disease, buffalo destruction and forced reservation policy ultimately ended independent Comanche control of the plains.

Dead Man’s Walk and Comanche Moon fictionalise this long conflict through the Rangers’ pursuit of Buffalo Hump and other Comanche figures, while also portraying the violence and dispossession produced by Texan expansion.
