Roanoke Colony

English expeditions backed by Walter Raleigh established settlements on Roanoke Island in 1585 and 1587. The ventures depended on maritime supply, private investment and knowledge obtained through contact with Algonquian-speaking communities along the coast of present-day North Carolina.

The first settlement was abandoned after conflict and shortage. John White led a second colony in 1587 but returned to England for supplies. War with Spain delayed his return until 1590, when he found the settlement deserted and the word “Croatoan” carved at the site. The colonists’ fate remains uncertain.
