Francis Drake sailed from Plymouth in December 1577 with five ships and crossed the Atlantic to South America. After wintering at Puerto San Julián, the surviving vessels entered the Strait of Magellan, where storms separated the expedition.
Drake continued alone in the Golden Hind, raiding Spanish shipping and ports along the Pacific coast before crossing the Pacific and Indian oceans. He returned to England in September 1580 with a large cargo and was knighted aboard his ship the following year.
The circumnavigation is central to fiction about Elizabethan navigation, privateering, global encounter and the developing conflict between England and Spain.
