War of the Fifth Coalition

1809 CE

The War of the Fifth Coalition in 1809 was Austria’s renewed attempt to overturn French dominance in central Europe. Austrian forces invaded Bavaria while Napoleon assembled troops from across his empire and allies, leading to a rapid campaign along the Danube.

At Aspern-Essling in May Napoleon suffered his first major battlefield reverse, but he recovered and defeated the main Austrian army at Wagram in July. The Treaty of Schönbrunn imposed further territorial losses on Austria and left Napoleon at the height of his continental power.
