Battle of Issus
333 BCE
The Battle of Issus took place in 333 BC when Alexander faced Darius III in southern Anatolia. The Macedonian victory forced Darius to flee and left members of the Persian royal family in Alexander’s hands. It was the first direct confrontation between the Macedonian king and the Persian Great King.
Issus mattered because it transformed Alexander’s invasion from a bold campaign into a serious imperial threat. The capture of the royal family created political and personal complications as well as propaganda opportunities. It also intensified the duel between Alexander and Darius.
