Ovid was a Roman poet whose works on myth, love and exile became central to later classical reception.

Ovid wrote the Amores, Ars Amatoria, Heroides, Metamorphoses and exile poetry after his banishment by Augustus. His works are witty, self-conscious and extraordinarily influential in transmitting Greek and Roman myth to later Europe.

He belongs in Classical for pages on mythology, Augustan culture, exile, love poetry and literary transformation. The Metamorphoses in particular underpins countless later retellings and should be treated as a major Classical source text.
