The Theban Hegemony began after Thebes defeated Sparta at Leuctra in 371 BC. Under leaders such as Epaminondas and Pelopidas, Thebes challenged Spartan power and reshaped the politics of central and southern Greece. The period was brief but highly significant.
This phase mattered because it shattered the myth of permanent Spartan military superiority. Thebes liberated Messenia from Spartan control and weakened the old balance of power. Yet Theban dominance did not last, and Greece remained fragmented before Macedon’s rise.
Theban power appears less often in popular fiction than Athens, Sparta, or Alexander, but it is valuable for novels about neglected turning points. Christian Cameron’s Greek fiction and broader ancient military novels can use this world of elite infantry, tactical innovation, and unstable alliances.
