Delian League

478–404 BCE

The Delian League was founded after the Persian Wars as an alliance of Greek states led by Athens. Its stated purpose was to continue the struggle against Persia and protect the Aegean. Over time, Athens tightened control over the league, turning allied contributions into the basis of an Athenian empire.

The league matters because it explains how Athens moved from defender of Greece to imperial power. Tribute, fleets, garrisons and political pressure created resentment among allies and fear among rivals. This shift helped create the conditions for conflict with Sparta and the Peloponnesian War.

Conn Iggulden’s Lion and Empire deal directly with this development: their descriptions place Pericles and Athens inside the growth of the Delian League and the political consequences of Athenian power. Broader novels about late-war Athens should not be presented as direct Delian League titles unless the league itself forms part of their setting.
