Daniel O’Connell

1775–1847

Daniel O'Connell was an Irish political leader known as the Liberator. He built a mass constitutional movement that achieved Catholic emancipation in 1829 and later campaigned, unsuccessfully, for repeal of the union with Britain.

Antonia Fraser’s The King and the Catholics is set in the King and the Catholics examines the struggle that led to Catholic Emancipation in 1829.
