Historical person
Simeon
1669 BCE–c. 21st century BCE
Simeon was a son of Jacob and traditional ancestor of the tribe of Simeon. Together with Levi he is associated with the attack on Shechem, an episode remembered as both defence of family honour and uncontrolled collective violence.
Anita Diamant’s The Red Tent places Simeon within a narrative shaped by family, marriage and personal loyalty, social change and the pressures of ordinary life, and court politics and dynastic power.
