Battle of Omdurman
1898
The Battle of Omdurman was fought in September 1898 near Khartoum. Anglo-Egyptian forces under Kitchener used modern rifles, artillery and machine guns against Mahdist attacks, producing a decisive but costly imbalance in casualties.
The battle completed the reconquest of Sudan and became a symbol of late Victorian imperial warfare. It also revealed the destructive power of modern weapons against massed assault.
For fiction, Omdurman offers a setting of desert warfare, reconnaissance, imperial ambition, personal courage and the moral unease of technological superiority.
