Battle of Gergovia

The Battle of Gergovia took place in 52 BC during the revolt led by Vercingetorix. Caesar attempted operations against a strong Gallic position but suffered a setback when Roman attacks failed and discipline broke down. It was one of the few moments in the Gallic Wars when Caesar’s control of events appeared uncertain.

Gergovia mattered because it showed that Gallic resistance could still threaten Caesar’s campaign. The defeat gave Vercingetorix prestige and reminded Rome’s enemies that Caesar was not invincible. It also added tension to the campaign that culminated at Alesia.
