A Sparrow Falls

France and South Africa after the First World War. Sean Courtney returns from military command concerned about the future of his estate and businesses. Mark Anders, another survivor of the trenches, becomes both his assistant and a possible heir. Mark’s experience of trench warfare and Sean’s public standing bring two generations of soldiers together during the difficult transition from wartime command to civilian politics.

Mark is caught between Sean’s daughter Storm and his hostile son Dirk as wartime loyalty gives way to a struggle over inheritance. The novel links the psychological aftermath of the Western Front with political and economic change in post-war South Africa. Land, conservation and inheritance become the new battlegrounds, demonstrating that the armistice has redirected violence and ambition rather than ended them.
