The Adriatic, AD 25. Roman authorities intensify their pursuit of the pirate bands, forcing Telemachus and his companions into a moving contest of ambush, concealment and divided alliances. The hunters know the coastal routes and can exploit rivalries among the crews. Telemachus’s growing ability as a fighter and navigator brings greater responsibility, but also makes him a target when old leaders fear losing authority.

Roman pursuit changes the balance inside the pirate crews. Leaders who seemed secure while raiding merchant vessels become vulnerable when avoiding capture requires cooperation, secrecy and rapid movement. Telemachus’s growing competence gives him influence but also exposes him to jealousy, making the external hunt inseparable from an internal contest over who deserves command.
