In 1941 Peter Lamb and the soldiers who survived the collapse in France are diverted into the defence of Greece instead of returning home. They join British and Commonwealth forces retreating before the German advance, fight around the Thermopylae position and struggle to organise New Zealand troops, Greek partisans and other men whose experience and loyalties differ sharply from their own.
Evacuation carries Lamb’s improvised force to Crete, where German airborne troops transform retreat into another desperate battle. Civilians, irregulars and historical figures including Evelyn Waugh become part of the confused Allied defence, and Lamb must learn to command a mixed body of survivors while distinguishing genuine help from danger inside a campaign already moving towards defeat.
