Grand and Batchelor Victorian Mysteries

The Grand and Batchelor mysteries pair Matthew Grand, a former Union cavalry officer, with English journalist James Batchelor as private enquiry agents in the years after the American Civil War. Their cases move between London and the United States, beginning in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and bringing the partners into contact with political conspiracies, post-war violence, river murders and the expanding machinery of nineteenth-century policing.

Across the series, Trow mixes invented crimes with documented events and historical personalities. Reconstruction Washington, Victorian London, the Maine coast, Dakota Territory and the contemporary art world all become investigative settings, allowing Grand’s American military past and Batchelor’s journalistic instincts to operate on both sides of the Atlantic.
