Peter Maxwell is attending a teachers’ training course when one of the participants is battered to death. The timing suggests that the killer knew the victim’s movements precisely, yet everyone on the course appears to possess an alibi and no witness admits seeing anything useful.
A second teacher is then murdered in the same brutal manner, revealing that the first death was not an isolated attack. For Maxwell the investigation becomes personal when he discovers that the new victim was once his lover. He begins testing the apparently secure alibis and looking for the connection between the two killings, convinced that the murderer’s careful planning must have left some inconsistency behind.
