Battle of Evesham

The Battle of Evesham was fought on 4 August 1265 at the decisive stage of the Second Barons’ War. Lord Edward, the future Edward I, manoeuvred against Simon de Montfort after escaping captivity and brought a stronger royalist army against Montfort’s forces near Evesham.

The battle ended in a crushing royalist victory. Simon de Montfort and many of his leading supporters were killed, Henry III was freed from baronial control, and organised resistance fragmented. Fighting continued, but Evesham destroyed the regime established after the Battle of Lewes.
