The Jackdaw Mysteries

The Jackdaw Mysteries follow physician Nicholas Shelby and Italian-born apothecary and tavern keeper Bianca Merton through the final decade of Elizabeth I’s reign. Beginning in London in 1590, Nicholas’s medical work and talent for asking unwelcome questions bring him under the control of Robert Cecil, whose intelligence network turns murder investigations into affairs of state. The sequence moves from Bankside and the households of suspected Catholics to Marrakesh, Padua and rebellion-torn Ireland before returning to a London preoccupied with the ageing queen and the uncertain succession.

Across the six novels Perry combines historical crime with espionage and the history of medicine. Plague, confessional division, the war with Spain, England’s diplomatic relationship with Morocco, the Roderigo López affair and the Nine Years’ War are not detached background events: each changes what Nicholas and Bianca can safely know, say and do. Real figures including Cecil, Elizabeth I, Christopher Marlowe, Edmund Spenser and the Earl of Essex enter the fictional plot without displacing the series’ central relationship, which develops from wary cooperation into marriage and family life as the political world around them becomes increasingly unstable.
