England, 1264. Adam de Norton is a landless young squire who still believes that courage, skill and chivalry can win him the knighthood and inheritance he has lost. A violent accident places him in the service of the hard and opportunistic Sir Robert de Dunstanville, and Adam’s education continues on the tournament circuit, where reputation and profit depend as much on calculation as on knightly ideals.
The personal quest is overtaken by the Second Barons’ War. Simon de Montfort challenges Henry III’s government, Prince Edward fights for the royal cause, and Adam and Robert must choose where their loyalties lie as England moves toward open battle. The climax at Lewes makes Adam’s pursuit of honour inseparable from a political struggle over royal authority, turning a coming-of-age story into a close view of civil war and the compromises demanded by medieval knighthood.
