Baghdad, 1917. Invalided from the Western Front, Captain Jim Stringer is sent to occupied Baghdad to investigate suspected treason. He arrives after British forces have taken the city from the Ottoman Empire, only to find his cover compromised and his expected contact dead. Heat, military tension and uncertainty about local loyalties make even ordinary movement dangerous.
Jim works on the railways around Baghdad while investigating the people gathered around the elegant Baghdad Railway Club and its enigmatic Lieutenant-Colonel Shepherd. The recently displaced Ottoman forces remain a threat, British occupation is politically fragile and espionage blurs the distinction between ally and enemy. The novel places its mystery within the real Mesopotamian Campaign, where transport, intelligence and imperial rivalry were central to military control.
