Martin Conisby begins the sequel stranded and solitary, still praying for vengeance against Richard Brandon and still unable to free himself from the grievance that has governed his life. His isolation is broken by Joanna, a fierce pirate woman whose arrival draws him back into a world of ships, pursuit and divided loyalties. Even reunion with Adam Penfeather and Joan Brandon cannot easily turn Martin from the enemy he believes he must destroy.

The pursuit carries Martin toward Spanish power and the Inquisition, where his imagined reckoning with Brandon proves very different from the one he has rehearsed for years. Farnol uses the final stage of the adventure to question the romance of revenge: captivity and suffering have altered both avenger and victim, and Martin must decide whether vengeance can restore anything that was lost. The result completes the pirate cycle as both a sea adventure and a moral reckoning.
